Kathy Sarpi
Big Super Fun Love Dance Party

September 2019

ABOUT

Kathy Sarpi is a Melbourne based visual artist, animator and funny gal. In 2016 Kathy graduated from University of Melbourne having completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts. Sarpi has worked predominantly in animation whilst also expanding her practice in painting, comics, collage and sculpture through participating and organising art events and exhibitions across Melbourne. Her award-winning graduate film “Habits” has screened in festivals worldwide. Kathy’s works explore the performative nature of human experience, drawing attention to uncomfortable, awkward and humorous gestures.

Drawing inspiration from her parent’s wedding video Kathy intends to celebrate love by creating a dance video revolving around the exchanges of two rather introverted people. Approaching animations with a youthful, bright style and accompanied by the eccentric, funky beats of William Onyeabor’s song “Hypertension”, “Big Super Fun Love Dance Party” is an awkward but exciting bop. Huge, elaborate social events like weddings come with enormous social pressure and expectation. Kathy choses to draw attention to the subtle interactions and expressions of people; attempting to reveal that the real reason we all love to come together is to party, (or to live, laugh, love etc.) Projected through the windows of Chin Chin’s, Kathy hopes to create an atmosphere of fun and excitement as patrons enjoy their food and listen to pop music.
